Scarab Beetle

Taken from the cover of ‘The Scarab’, a catalogue from Jerusalem Museum,
loaned by Leonard Bazar.

This project is an attractive ‘brooch’ design in needlelace. It is a moderately difficult pattern, probably not for beginners. The design may be worked as it is, couching around all the shapes, or for a more 3-D effect separate all the elements, working one large piece for the base and the other areas individually.

I give below the threads that were used for this piece, but any threads of suitable thickness would work well.
Obviously, you may choose different colours to match your intended use.

Requirements

  • Calico backing
  • Drawing - complete or separated
  • Architects linen or matt film
  • Ballpoint sewing needles
  • Usual sewing kit
  • Piece of cake decorators wire - size no.28 or 30
  • Threads:
    • Guterman 100/3 silk in Royal blue, or Colcoton Unikat 70/2, Colour no. 4075
    • Madiera metallic no.40 in gold
  • No. 11 and no. 14 seed beads - colour of your choice.

Note:
The size of the main scarab in the pattern above should be 7.8cm x5.5cm (3.1in x 2.2in) when printed out.

Stitches used    (all described further in the ‘stitches’ page)

1  Single corded Brussels

2  Whipped twisted stitch (Point d’Espagne)

The head has beads incorporated into the buttonhole stitch cordonette as it is worked.
